Sure, it’s acceptable chatter
among friends to talk about our new
iPhone or the game that’s got us hooked,
but bring up the topic of passwords ... and
you’ll probably be met with crickets.
Even so, deep down, we can at least
concede those mix of characters hiding
behind dots when we log in to things are
kind of impor tant.
We’ve all seen the headlines about how
this website or that company was hacked.
Quite likely you’ve at some point
received an email from a ser vice asking you
to replace your old password because there
was a “security breach”.
So to keep our information as safe as
possible, being careful with passwords
Enter, the “password manager”.
This is a ser vice where you can sign in
with your “master password” and then store
all your other passwords to all other apps
Typically, you can also store other
sensitive information such as credit card
This is all locked behind your “master
password” – which, of course, should be
as unique as possible to ensure it can’t be
Many of these ser vices can be used
on your phone and computer, so if you’re
logging in to an app for the first time on
a new device, they’ll remember your login
details for you.

Each of these offer free options that will
sync across your devices, with premium
upgrades available for more serious users
things like file storage and a contingency
plan for loved ones to access your
passwords in an emergency.
Others, like 1Password, will give you
a trial version, but you’ll need to pay to
continue using them after the first month.
To beef up security, one of the key
features among these ser vices is that when
you sign up to a new ser vice, they will
automatically generate a complex password
Another option, although without the
full extent of features as others, is the
password manager you may not know
you’re already using.
For Google Chrome or Android users
who are prone to hitting the “remember
this password” button, go to passwords.
google.com and you can view all your
stored login details.
It will show a list of different apps and
websites, but to view any of the actual login
details, you’ll be asked to re-enter your
As this is effectively another “master
password”, it’s worth making sure your
Google password is highly secure.
Struggle to remember all your login details? A password manager
might be the solution, Michael DiFabrizio writes.
LastPass can store your
passwords and credit card
details, as well as generate a
complex password when you
sign up to a new service.
