Home' Sunraysia Daily : Mallee Bearings 30 Years Contents ALMOST an ins tu on in his own
right, Wayne Hall has been proudly
working for Mallee Bearings for
almost the en re 30 years of opera on.
Wayne almost headed into the electrical
trade with a friend at the end of his Year
11 studies, but instead began working at
Mallee Bearings for his brother, John, on
November 15, 1982.
Prior to that, Wayne had been working
part- me at Fishers in Mildura, his me
working under Bill Fisher a great learning
experience, saying, "He was tough but you
learnt a lot."
"Mum and Dad had asked me what I
wanted to do a er school, then John asked
me to come and work for him, so that's
what I did," Wayne said.
Wayne remembers that the original shop,
at 157 Tenth Street, was only quite small,
and John was working there at the me
with only one other employee, as well as
their dad Jack.
"I always said the old shop had only two
doors - the front door and the dunny door!
"A lot of the me if we had received a
bigger order, we'd have to unpack it on the
front lawn. There just wasn't the room out
"We'd also have to keep a lot of our stock
in the Avery's Scales building next door."
Wayne says he s ll looks at the old store
loca on with its li le bit of green paint on
the shop front - a small reminder of the
original home of Mallee Bearings.
"I started working with
Dad out the back, open-
ing parcels of parts that
arrived each morning.
That was where everyone
"You learned a lot out
the back, from what all
the parts were to ge ng
to know each of the sup-
From there Wayne pro-
gressed to the role of Sales Representa ve,
which he started doing in 1986.
In his 29 years with Mallee Bearings,
Wayne has seen many changes including
the move to the new premises.
Mallee Bearings had already established
itself in the community as a respected sup-
plier of bearings and parts, but the move
made a huge difference to the business.
"It was a huge job to move, but well
worth it," Wayne said.
"It was from there the business really
Wayne said that for the rst few years,
they felt they were in this huge premises.
But it wasn't long before John realised they
would need more room.
With that, the current
premises was doubled in size
"Now the shop is almost
too small again."
Aside from changes to
the shop, Wayne has seen
many changes to the people
they supply to. There are
companies that don't exist
anymore, such as the IPC.
Their workshops and stores aren't there any
more, and many of the workshop manag-
ers Wayne used to work with are no longer
Things are also more compe ve today,
with parts and bearings harder to sell.
"It's a sign of the mes more than any-
thing. We had a boom me from 1988 to
about 1992, and that was as a result of the
table grape industry going really well."
In recent mes, Wayne has also seen
Mallee Bearings supply to businesses he
never would have imagined, the business
constantly changing and evolving to suit
the climate. Since becoming part of the
AIS buying group, it has opened many new
doors to the business.
Mallee Bearings for a me also opened
their doors on a Sunday morning during
the wheat harvest to help out their farming
clients, with Wayne on duty those Sunday
Wayne has a busy schedule, with 400 cli-
ents on his list, travelling right throughout
the Mallee. Wayne and the team at Mallee
Bearings are always available when their
clients need them, especially when break
"It's just a part of life that when a cus-
tomer calls with a break down and it's the
business me of their season, everything
else has to wait.
Mallee Bearings has been a signi cant
part of Wayne's life for almost three dec-
ades, and he acknowledges the me has
"I s ll enjoy doing it," he said.
